Countdown to Droid: Day #15

It's that time again! Thanks for comming back! I got some Droid Incredible news, first off it is actually shipping with a new box now...one that actually looks like it belongs in the family of Droids! No more white boxes!

The second bit of news for the Incredible is kind of worrisome. Check out this Verizon phaseout/closeout list:

Do you see what I see? Thats right the Droid Incredible is at the bottom of that list! How do you phaseout a phone that only came out a couple months ago? Especially seeing as how this is the top Android phone out on Verizon right now IMHO. What kind of updates will they push out if it's already on the closeout list? It's hard to tell. You might also notice the Droid Eris on that list too. Which isn't a big surprise but I was hoping it might get Froyo so we could see what 2.2 could do on an older device. Well what can ya do? No timeframes here or anything so don't get too worried yet but it's on the horizon at Verizon....

Thats gonna wrap up another day here at the Countdown! As always please feel free to leave any questions or comments you may have. Don't forget to follow us on Google, subscribe to our feed, share us on Facebook or Twitter or follow on Twitter @ReBuke78.

Countdown to Droid: Day #14

Welcome back! We are at the two week mark on our Countdown to Droid! Only 6 weeks to go till i can enjoy that Android goodness (hopefully w/ Froyo!). There's already been an accessory sited on Amazon.com.

If you follow the actual link you'll see it won't be released until June 22nd. Which is actually the day before the big announcement as I mentioned in an earlier blog.

I got to say as of right now someone would have to really kick it into high gear and pump out a grade A phone for me to want something other than the Droid X. Although i thought that about the Droid Incredible too, so who really knows until that time comes and I purchase my phone.

Speaking of there's been another sighting of the Droid 2 from a Gizmodo reader:

Check out what their first impressions were and read the whole article here.  Thats gonna wrap another day here at the Countdown! As always please leave any comments or questions you may have. Countdown to Droid: Day #13

Welcome back! it's Day #13 and we are still going strong in our obsession of Droid! As I mentioned I wanna talk a few things Google which of course is responsible for all our Android/Droid goodness! First up Google TV! For those of you who weren't watching the Google I/O conference like I was as soon as it was up on YouTube. You might not have heard about Google TV. So whats the basic idea behind Google TV? Google TV brings your TV, your DVR, and everyones Internet together in one. They put up a quick video explaining it on YouTube:

Other than "coming this Fall" we don't have any actual dates yet. But what I like most about this idea is the set-top boxes that Logitech is going to make that will go great with my nice HDTV I already have. And I'm sure at a fraction of the cost the new Sony Google TV's are. Although no price has been disclosed yet either.

The set-top box is officially being called the Logitech Revue. Logitech explained there reasoning behind the name:

At Logitech, we’re known for certain kinds of products – peripherals, video calling, entertainment control, streaming media….

Logitech Revue does everything we’re known for and more. So it couldn’t just be the Harmony Box or Squeezebox TV or, even worse, the Logitech TV Hub (although believe me, we’ve discussed them all). The meaning of Revue is a type of multi-act theatrical entertainment that combined music, dance and sketches – wildly popular between 1910 and 1930.

Logitech Revue is a companion box and controller that brings the experience of Google TV to your TV screen. It combines everything on the Web, cable or satellite content, apps, video calling and more that will be wildly popular between 2010 and 2030, until we reinvent interaction again.

It all sounds great to me for one! Thats gonna wrap another day here at the Countdown! As always please leave any comments or questions you may have. Don't forget to follow us, subscribe to our feed, share us on Facebook or Twitter or follow us on Twitter @ReBuke78. Till next time...

Countdown to Droid: Day # 12

Welcome back! It's Day #12 and we are ready to rock! Lots of Motorola Droid X news to get to so lets jump in! First off have you heard about this:

The above e-mail went out to press notifying of the event.  June 23rd, this coming Wednesday is the day where we should really get some good news! Also of some interest is the keynote speakers of course Verizon, Google, & Motorola  has one, but, also Adobe does too.....Maybe we'll get lucky and have Froyo with Flash 10.1 already on The Droid X and Droid 2? One can hope!

Next up Verizon has actually updated their Droid site including the Droid X. Not much info given more than it's a 4.3" screen, 8MP camera, and captures 720p. but still nice to see some more official news.

Check out the site at DroidDoes.com to see for yourself. Also Kellex over at Droid-Life wrote an interesting article about the Droid red eyes...check it out here

Thats gonna wrap up Day #12, tomorrow we'll talk a little more about Google TV. As always please leave any comments or questions you may have. Don't forget to follow us, subscribe to our feed, share us on Facebook or Twitter or follow us on Twitter @ReBuke78. Till next time...

Countdown to Droid: Day #11

Welcome back to Day #11 of our Countdown to Droid. Last time we heard about the Droid X coming in July. Well the good folks at Droid-Life have given us a date: July 19th. The official announcement is to be made from Verizon sometime this coming week. Keep your fingers crossed!

On to other things. Like I mentioned before lets jump into the other carriers and the android phones they offer. Lets start with Sprint since they have the biggest and baddest Android out there right now. Thats right the HTC EVO 4G!

HTC EVO 4G Android Phone (Sprint)
Specs:
3G/4G capability
Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ QSD8650 (1GHz) processor
4.3” capacitive display with pinch-to-zoom and tactile feedback
Android 2.1
8-megapixel auto-focus camera with dual LED flash
Capture HD-quality video (720p)
HDMI audio/video port
1.3 MP front-facing camera
Expandable memory: 8GB microSD card included; supports up to 32GB
And don't forget it's niffty kickstand too!

A pretty bad ass phone over-all. Some people have issues with the battery life at first but usually just until the glow of having a new phone wears off and they get back to normal usuage it seems to do alright.

I think thats all we are gonna cover today i did want to mention again that if you're on T-Mobile and looking to switch to a family plan or add a line on June 19th for fathers day all there phones are free for Father's Day. It's there "mother of all Father's Day Sales" Don't miss it!

Welcome back! We've made it to Double digits folks! It's Day #10 of our Countdown to Droid. There's some new pics up at Droid Life that are slides of commercials for the Droid 2 and Droid X. Take a quick look below and check them out at Droid Life
This one is obviously for the Droid 2(D2)

And this one for the Droid X (DX)

And how about a little Mile High Club action for the Droid X? Well someone got a gander  at it over at Android Central way up in the sky, its a bird, it's a plane, it's.....

....a DX!

Well that about wraps it up for another day! Over the next few days we'll of course give you the latest rumors to pop up but we'll also look into your Android options at other carriers besides Verizon. Countdown to Droid: Day #8

We've made it to Day #8 the rumor mills have been pretty quiet lately but there's of course some new leaked pics of the Motorola Droid X for size comparison to the Evo & iPhone, and another with the Droid X and Eris:

The Droid X on the left, then EVO, and finally the iPhone on the right. Pic through Boy Genius Report

In this one the Droid X is on the right and the Eris is on the left. Pic also from BGR

Looking pretty big in comparison to the other phones, but not to big for me! One other thing I saw when scouring the blogs today was something I think is awesome and just goes to show how open Google truly is. There's a new App store in the Android Market. Thats right a competing app store in the Android Market. It's called AndSpot Market with their tagline being: "Welcome to the alternative Android Markeplace". Supposedly for those that think its too hard to find apps in the current Android Market either browsing or searching. Only time will tell if they can really outdo Android Market....Won't see something like this happening over at iPhone!

Well this wraps up the blog today, comeback tomorrow for Day #9! Your questions and comments are always welcome!

Countdown to Droid: Day #7

Welcome Back! As promised we are delving into the HTC Scorpion rumors today and maybe some other rumors as well. So Lets get to it! There isn't actually a lot known about the Scorpion other than the processor which is to be 1.5ghz and its running Android 2.2 (Froyo). For me thats enough there, Froyo already speeds up to 5x on the processors out there now, but a 1.5ghz processor? Now you're talking lightning fast! Other than that its 4g bound...originally to be on Sprint's WiMax 4g but now seems to be headed to Verizons LTE 4g network! Which of course makes me one happy camper! And sadly thats about it as of this posting for the runored specs of the HTC Scorpion.

So ufortunately we must move past the Scorpion and move farther out into.....the Galaxy! Or rather the Samsung Galaxy S....
Originally this was said to be coming to all 4 major carriers which would include of course, Verizon. No signs of that yet and who knows if it will happen but that shouldn't stop me talking about a pretty sweet looking phone!
So lets get the Specs:
4.0” WVGA(480x800) 16M SUPER AMOLED
mDNIe(Mobile Digital Natural Image engine)
Android 2.1 (Eclair) w/ Samsungs UI
1Ghz processor
5.0 Megapixel AF camera
HD Video Player & Recorder (1280 x 720) @ 30fps
Memory: 16GB/8GB+ MicroSD(Up to 32GB)

It really does look quite nice the biggest thing being the Super AMOLED display that should really display quality graphics......if not in the daylight....

Well thats it for todays blog. Join us for Day#8 tomorrow and more rumors abound! Please feel free to comment with any questions or concerns...follow us, subscribe, or just come back again soon!

Countdown to Droid: Day #6

WWelcome back it's Day #6 and the rumors have been flying today! So much so in fact that I have to go back over the Motorola phones of yesterdays blog!
No Longer called the Motorola Shadow or Xtreme. it shall be know as......Droid X! Here's a pic of the front from Droid Life
Nice looking phone to say the least! Lets check out the specs:
4.3" WVGA 450 x 854
OMAP 3630 with PowerVR SGX530 GPU processor
8mp camera with dual LED flash
720p recording with HDMI out
Front facing camera
Android 2.1 (or 2.2)

The Motorola Droid 2 was the other phone we mentioned and pics have surfaced once again at Droid Life that have everyone chattering about it!

These are the specs up to date as far as I know:
3.7″ screen
750MHz OMAP processor
5MP camera
Android 2.1 (w/ new version of Motoblur)
Wi-Fi tethering
8GB internal
8GB SD card preinstalled
Updated keyboard
What has a lot of people in an uproar is the inclusion of motoblur, new version or not! The hardcore Droid fans love the stock Android UI and think of this as more or less a slap in the face....but if it can be turned off maybe not so bad? We shall see but I think that about wraps it up for Day #6! I know we didn't get to the HTC Scorpion yet but maybe tomorrow. Oh yeah one more tid bit from Motorola...it's rumored to be coming out with a 2ghz phone this year! That'd definitely be something to see! Questions and comments are always welcome!

Countdown to Droid: 60 Days = 60 Blogs; Day #5

Welcome back to the countdown! We are on Day #5 and finally going to talk about what's rumoured to be coming to Verizon! Day #4 we ended our little walk-through of Verizon's current line-up of Android phones and my love of the Droid Incredible by HTC and that I think its the phone to beat!

Now onto the phones that could be coming to Verizon that could actually dethrone the Incredible. There are currently 2 contenders from Motorola who announced they would be bringing 2 Android phones to Verizon in July. Of course they didn't mention which two phones they were launching. Which of course leads to lots of rumors.

Heard of the Motorola Shadow/Xtreme? Supposedly. to be a beast of a phone with a 4.1" FVGA touch-screen, a 700mhz processer, 8mp camera capable of 720p and an hdmi out, I've heard it'll have Android 2.1, but I've also heard 2.2 I've heard MotoBlur and I've heard no MotoBlur. We'll just have to wait and see what ends up on it at launch. Either way it looks like a pretty impressive phone.

The other is the sequel to the ever popular Motorola Droid, the Droid 2. Not too much is really known about this phone which is probably why some believe this is the same as the Shadow/Xtreme. There are pictures that clearly show the standard buttons ike home, back, etc. But there is also other pics that show a blank. front screen without buttons ala Droid style. Not too mention there are pics of the Droid 2 keyboard. Eventually i'll add pics or links for reference. But otherwise another high-end phone with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard.

Both phones are definitely knocking loudly on the Droid Incredible's door! Obviously HTC won't take this for too long without stinging back! (sorry I couldn't help it). that's gonna end it for Day #5, come back tomorrow and we'll speculate about the HTC Scorpion!

Countdown to Droid: 60 Days = 60Blogs ; Day #4

Welcome back! Blog #4 coming at you. Lets talk LG Ally. the first. Android LG has produced for Verizon. As far as Android slide-out QWERTY phones go this is a decent mid-range phone at a decent price (w/ contract extension). So let's get right into the specs of the Ally:
Android 2.1 (Eclair)
600 mhz processer
3.2 mp camera
3.2" WVGA touch screen
slide-out QWERTY keyboard

besides the nice Iron Man 2 tie in this just isn't the phone for my tastes. that ends the current line up of Android phones at Verizon. Right now the Droid Incredible by HTC. would Br my best bet at a high end Android smartphone at Verizon.

But the rumors of what could be coming to Verizon really has me drooling! And not to mention how close they seem to be actually coming out makes me wonder if the incredible will be able to hold out for the next 50+ days as my top dog in the pile. only time will tell and speaking of its time for me to end another blog. thanks for reading and please feel free to leave any questions or comments.

Countdown to Droid: 60 Days = 60 Blogs; Day #3

welcome to the post for Day #3! A little late do to some technical difficulties. but we'll manage and move on!This is where I really start to get excited! I love HTC's Droid Incredible! You already know I think. HTC makes some damn fine phones and the Incredible definitely proves that point! So lets talk specs:3 .7" 480 x 800 WVGA AMOLED touch screen Android 2.1 (Eclair) w/ Sense UI 1g SnapDragon processer QSD8650 8 megapixel camera with dual flash
this is currently the top smartphone Verizon has to offer in Mu humble opinion. the looks of the Incredible is similar to most. top end HTC phones available. it's actually not too different. cosmetics wise of the Eris except for size and some red trimmings to give it that Verizon style.
I also want to go into the Eris here a little more. For the price it really is a great phone to start your Android life on. lets talk specs:
Android 1.5 (upgradeable to 2.1) with Sense UI
528 mhz Qualcomm processer MSM7600
3.2" TFT LCD touch screen 320 x 480
5 megapixel camera w/ auto focus

Once again the Eris packs a lot of features for a great price. Even the LG Ally which only has a 3.2 mp cam on it. The only drawback to the Eris is not knowing if it will get the 2.2 (Froyo).

Well that's it for day #3, ill be back later to go into the LG Ally for day #4. if the formatting on this looks bad you have my apologies I'm doing this one from .t phone

Countdown to Droid: Day #2

I'm going to go through all the phones available right now on Verizon. As I mentioned yesterday there's the Droid Eris by HTC, Motorola Droid & Devour, Droid Incredible by HTC, and the LG Ally. They all run some version of Android some upgradeable now, some in the future and some who knows.

So lets talk about the Motorola Droid. verizons first powerhouse Android phone with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard.
Lets talk specifics:
3.7" Touch Screen 480x854 WVGA display,
5 Megapixel camera with  dual LED Flash
Upgradeable to Android 2.1 (Eclair)
OMAP3430 — 550MHz processor
Pre–installed 16GB microSD

Not a bad looking phone Specs-wise. it seemed a little bulky to me, I'm not big on the slide out QWERTY keyboards as it is which just seemed to add to the bulkiness of it. If yopu're heavy on the texting maybe that is key to your phone needs but not mine. I don't have too much of a problem with the virtual keyboards and they only seem to get better. So this Phone is probably not for me

Next up is the Motorola Devour, another slide out QWERTY keyboard phone
Specs:
3.1" Touch Screen HVGA, 320 x 480
3.0 Megapixel camera
Android 1.6 (Donut) OS with MOTOBLUR™
Qualcomm MSM7627 processor with dedicated HW Acceleration
8GB microSD card pre–installed on–device

This is clearly a lower end Android phone. meant for texting, twitter, facebook, and what not with the MotoBlur. Alot of people hate MotoBlur and I can understand why but at the same token it serves a need for some people. Definitely a backstep from the Droid and probably from the Droid Eris too. Once again with the slide-out QWERTY keyboard. As you might have guessed this is also not the phone for me.

I think thats going to be it for today. Please feel free to leave any questions or comments or concerns you might have about my blog or anything Android in general. Maybe you're to be purchasing a new phone yourself and are wondering if Android is for you (it is!). Whatever it is don't hesitate to ask. Thanks again

Countdown to Droid; Day #1

Welcome to Droid Testing, the future home of the world's greatest blogger to all things Android! That humble and modest blogger being myself; Michael English aka "ReBuke". I am a self proclaimed Android nut job that currently owns a Samsung Omnia. For those of you keeping tabs that is definitely not an android phone! Like a lot of wireless customers i too am the victim of a contract and have to wait to upgrade to the latest and greatest Android splendor!  That Verizon has to offer

Which brings us to the countdown; two months, thats how long i have to wait to upgrade. While that might not seem like much to you it seems like its taken forever to get this close and that 2 months will really shape what Android phone I choose to upgrade to. So the plan is simple; 60 days, 60 blogs.

I scour the Android blogs daily looking to read what the latest rumors/leaked photos/specs are of whats coming soon. And I got to say its a great time to get a new phone at Verizon! The choices just seem to be getting better and better. You almost want to wait longer just to see whats around the corner, but that would be too much for my heart to take!

So whats out for Verizon now Android-wise? Well the first Android Phone for Verizon was the Droid Eris by HTC. I've had a chance to mess with this phone quite a bit as a friend of mine has one. I got to say its not a bad phone. And now with the Android 2.1 (Eclair) update for the Eris, it really is a nice mid-range phone. HTC doesn't make bad phones, hell they pretty much started the smartphone craze that grips us all today!

Well i think that about does it for day numero uno. Tomorrow my thoughts on the Motorola Droid and Devour and who knows what else. Hopefully this blog will give you a little entertainment, a little info (lots of info in the future), & a reason to read again.
